Christopher had just been laid off when we started working together, and he was understandably in crisis. As a single dad he needed to find work – fast – to support himself and his teenage daughter. Because of the nature of his skills, his needs, and the local economy our strategy was to help him create immediate income through self-employment.
First, we focused on improving his confidence and intuition so he could listen to and trust his inner wisdom. Then, we developed a solid marketing plan and clear strategy to achieve his business vision. As business began to pour in, he needed to talk through decisions about who to hire, how to conduct interviews, and how to add subcontractors and administrative assistants. Within six months, his business was providing the same level of income he had enjoyed as an employee.
After stabilizing his immediate situation we then looked into the other areas of his life in order to create a more sustainable future. Through coaching, he strengthened his personal boundaries and learned tools which made him a more effective parent. We began to explore the kinds of career – and relationship – he would want to have for the long term.
Christopher was from the generation of men who were not taught to be aware of their emotional needs, and he had a health scare that led him to take his wellness much more seriously. He started taking better care of himself and began an exercise program. A mindfulness practice helped him find gratitude and acceptance of the past.
It was truly exciting to me to see Christopher develop a better relationship with himself and a higher level of emotional intelligence as a result of our work. Coincidentally, as he grew more confident in his professional authority he also gained confidence in himself as a parent and as a potential partner. His communication style improved and he became more effective in guiding his girls into making good decisions for themselves. He found full-time work with a stable company and traded his self-employment for a stable job with benefits. As he became happier, he discovered a new interest in dating and met a woman he really liked.
Christopher grew so much through our work together. He’s now married and looking ahead to retirement from a solid career. He was able to help his girls create healthy adult lives and enjoys a positive relationship with them. Most important, he repaired his sense of himself — and what is possible.
